ICG GP40X Locomotive

Cutting Edge Scale Models is proud to offer an extremely accurate rendition of the Illinois Central Gulf GP40X. Rebuilt from a GP35 core by EMD, this locomotive was one of the first to use EMD's brand-new 645 prime mover. The prototype featured an extra radiator fan and flared radiators.

The only example of this build was EMD 433a, a testbed for the GP40. This unit was built in 1965. It is commonly confused with the 1972 GP40X units that were built as precursors to the GP50, but the only similarities are the flared radiators and 645 prime mover.

The unit was later sold to the Illinois Central Gulf, where it revieved a nose headlight and became ICG 3075.

Cutting Edge Scale Models offers both versions so you can faithfully model ICG 3075 or EMD 433a.  You will need the following:

  • (1) GP40X shell of your choice (EMD 433a -OR- ICG 3075)

  • (1) Atlas GP35 Locomotive

  • (1) Set of BLMA 48" Fan Grilles

  • (1) Set of BLMA 15" Drop Grab Irons

  • (1) Set of BLMA Lift Rings (EMD)

Simply install the lift rings, grab irons, and fan grilles in the right spot, pop off the shell, put on the new one, and voila! You have a beautiful GP40X locomotive ready for paint.

*Before construction a soak in bestine for approx. one hour and some sanding will be required.
